The Essex Independent Custody Visiting Scheme

Recruiting has reopened for volunteers to join our panel of Independent Custody Visitors (ICVs). The scheme plays a crucial role in helping to ensure the welfare and dignity of people detained in police custody.

The Essex Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner’s Independent Custody Visitors are a panel of volunteers who make unannounced visits to police custody suites across Essex. Visits take place in pairs at various times of the day and night and each ICV carries out approximately 3 visits per month. They report on the treatment of detainees and conditions within the custody suite, helping to ensure that police and the public have the highest confidence in the safety and welfare of those detained.

Completely autonomous from the Police, Independent Custody Visitors have the right to access custody suites and speak directly to the detainees. Visitors complete a report and record their findings, including any issues raised.

The ICV scheme in Essex is committed to ensuring that its panel members reflect the communities they represent, and we welcome applications from all age groups and all walks of life. Full training and support is provided and members also have the opportunity to attend regular meetings and conferences to further develop their skills.

The posts are voluntary and unpaid, but travel expenses are fully reimbursed. Applicants must be aged 18 and over and recruitment is subject to police vetting.

If you’re interested in the role and would like to know more, you can visit: https://www.essex.pfcc.police.uk/giving-you-a-voice/independent-custody-visiting/, or email [email protected] application, we may contact you for more information. If your application is successful, we will ask you to come in and meet the team. All volunteers are subject to Essex Police Vetting procedures.
