Crime levels have increased in Brentwood but Essex Police has been carrying out proactive operations to combat the rise. Details of these have been published today as part of a comprehensive briefing prepared ahead of a public meeting taking place in the district, hosted and organised by Roger Hirst, the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex. The meeting is taking place on Tuesday, February 20 at the Hutton Community Centre in Harrison Close, Hutton, CM13 1LP between 6.30pm and 8pm. The briefing prepared by the district policing team for Mr Hirst highlights that:
  • Policing operations have been carried out to help prevent pony and cart racing taking place on the A127
  • Officers have increased their use of Section 61 powers to help remove unauthorised encampments from the district
  • Crime and anti-social behaviour issues in Brentwood High Street have been dealt with proactively thanks to joint work with the Community Safety Partnership and local schools
  • Crime prevention advice was issued and pre-planned policing operations have taken place to reduce the number of offences caused by people on motorcycles
Mr Hirst said: “The briefing shows that last year crime in the district had increased overall by 16.9 per cent. This is in line with the national increases and changes to how crime is now recorded. We understand the impact this has on communities and families, and we know we have to get ahead of this increase and will be investing more in crime prevention and local policing this year. However, it is clear that officers are already taking a proactive approach to dealing with these crimes and lots of work has been done. It is also heartening to see that numbers of dwelling burglaries has reduced and incidents of anti-social behaviour has decreased. I’m looking forward to hearing more about this and about local residents’ concerns at the meeting next week.” Jane Gardner, the Deputy Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex, District Commander Chief Inspector Lewis Basford plus representatives from Essex County Fire and Rescue Service and the local Community Safety Partnership will also be attending the event.
