Commissioner Roger Hirst with Deputy PFCC Jane Gardner

Essex is celebrating the remarkable career of Deputy Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, Jane Gardner, who retires today after an incredible 43 years of public service and nearly a decade at the PFCC office.

Jane joined the PFCC team in 2016, bringing a wealth of experience from local government, policing, fire and rescue and the voluntary sector. Throughout her tenure, she has been a driving force behind community safety, safeguarding and partnership working, making Essex a safer and stronger county.

Her leadership has been instrumental in:

  • Domestic Abuse Response: Chairing the Southend, Essex & Thurrock Domestic Abuse Board (SETDAB) for seven years, spearheading initiatives like the #Reflect campaign, the J9 safe spaces scheme, and high-impact awareness projects such as It’s Never Too Late and DAAWN.
  • Suicide Prevention: Leading the Southend, Thurrock and Essex Suicide Prevention Board, ensuring compassionate and joined-up support for those in crisis.
  • Community Engagement: Strengthening collaboration between Essex Police, Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, local authorities, charities, and community groups.

Beyond her professional achievements, Jane served as a Special Constable in Colchester for eight years, rising to the rank of Special Superintendent and regularly policing major events and the night-time economy.

Roger Hirst, Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex, said: “Jane has been an exceptional Deputy PFCC and an inspirational public servant. Her integrity, compassion and commitment to partnership working has made Essex a safer place.

“Jane’s leadership on domestic abuse and safeguarding has shaped national best practice, and her ability to bring agencies together to support the most vulnerable is unmatched.

“She leaves a legacy that will continue to benefit our communities for many years to come, and we owe her our sincere thanks and admiration.”

BJ Harrington, Chief Constable of Essex Police, added: “Jane has devoted her entire career to improving public safety, protecting the vulnerable and strengthening trust between communities and policing. Her impact on the way we work across Essex is profound.”

Rick Hylton, Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Jane represents the very best of public service. Her dedication and leadership have made a lasting difference.”

Jane’s colleagues and partners gathered earlier this week to give her a heartfelt send-off, celebrating her outstanding contribution to Essex and wishing her well for the future.
