No One Should Live in Fear Because of Who They Are

Hate crime in any form is unacceptable. That’s the clear message from Essex Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner Roger Hirst as the county marks National Hate Crime Awareness Week 2025.

“No one should live in fear because of who they are,” said Mr Hirst. “Hate crime is corrosive and unacceptable. We stand with victims and will continue working with Essex Police, local councils and community groups to prevent hate, support those affected and bring perpetrators to justice.”

In the 12 months to August 2025, Essex recorded a 4.8% increase in reported hate crimes. While this rise highlights ongoing challenges, it also reflects growing confidence among victims to come forward and seek support.

Mr Hirst emphasised the importance of continued vigilance and collaboration to tackle hate crime at its roots.

“We must never be complacent. Every report is a call to action. Whether it’s through education, community engagement or enforcement, we are committed to building a safer, more inclusive Essex.”
