A Government consultation to seek views on a proposal to form a Mayoral Combined County Authority for Greater Essex - the area represented by Essex County Council, Southend-on-Sea City Council, and Thurrock Council – has now been launched.

Essex is part of The Devolution Priority Programme which will provide a fast-track to mayoral devolution, aiming to see a new wave of mayoral elections in May 2026.

The consultation will run until Sunday 13 April 2025.

Local Government reorganisation is also being discussed across the county, but this is a separate process and is not part of this Government consultation.
