After months of preparation, the Police Crime Commissioner Nick Alston was able to present awards to the winners of the Essex Neighbourhood Watch Awards (NHW) 2013. The winners were declared at Essex Police Headquarters where the event was hosted by Assistant Chief Constable Maurice Mason at Police HQ in Chelmsford along with Nick Alston. Alan Johnson, Chair of the Essex NHW Association announced the winners of the annual competition to find the best examples of active NHW Co-ordinators. Now in its fourth year and the 2013 Awards resulted in 11 District winners attended the reception. Whilst all the District nominations received a certificate of appreciation, there was also a new addition to this year’s event; a chance to win a gold, silver or bronze award. Lini Kilpatrick from Southend and Peter Salmon from Brentwood scooped a joint gold award, whilst Tracey Graham from Epping Forest secured silver and Mike Vaughan-Chatfield from Tendering merited a bronze award.  There was also a special award to Sgt Nathalie Carr of Essex Police, who is due to retire this summer, for her unstinting support for NHW over the past five years.  Nick Alston commented at the event. “Police rely on local communities to help them with information and intelligence. This is one of the reasons why organisations like NHW are so important. I am tremendously encouraged that the partnerships surrounding NHW are working closer together. This is creating greater community resilience and helping to put communities at the centre of local solutions.  “The spectrum of volunteering and social action, from committed community members and NHW members through to special constables doing frontline police work on a voluntary basis is impressive.  There is a role for everyone to play in keeping their communities safe.”  Nick Alston also spoke about the importance of citizenship in policing and its emergence on the national agenda led by the National College of Policing. Mr Mason said: “Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinators play an important part in making Essex a safe place to live and work. I was delighted to be able to honour their efforts at this event. They give up their own time to help their communities and that is something that should be commended.” Alan Johnson commented: “We are delighted that our partners in Essex Police and the PCC support these Awards. It is a clear sign that the Police and Crime Commissioner value the dedication and hard work that these voluntary Co-ordinators give to their communities.”  List of winners by district:  Braintree: Andrew Crane Brentwood: Peter Salmon Castle Point: Peter Faulkner Chelmsford: Alan Bowling Epping Forest: Tracey Graham Maldon: Sue Thomson Rochford: Bill Trower Southend: Lini Kilpatrick Tendring: Mike Vaughan-Chatfield Thurrock: Mavis Lawrence and Jackie Robe Uttlesford: John McAdams Special Award: Sgt Nathalie Carr For more information, click here
